Everything you need to know before you visit High Grange

We’ve pulled together answers to the questions we’re most often asked. If you have any concerns about accessibility, directions, bookings or what to wear,  this page should help you feel fully prepared!

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just drop us a line — we’re always happy to help.

I have questions before booking

Do you do private events?

Yes, we do. From birthdays and weddings to corporate gatherings and celebration dinners, we cater for all kinds of private events, both here in our woodland kitchen and at venues across the South West. You can read more on our Private Events & Catering page. If you have any questions or would like a bespoke quote, just get in touch.

I have mobility requirements

Please contact us before booking if you have accessibility needs. High Grange is a rural site, and all of our events involve moving across uneven ground, including grass and gravel. We are a small, independent business, but with a little advance planning, we will do everything we can to accommodate your requirements.

Can my partner come along on the Fire School day?

One of the joys of Fire School is working with fellow guests throughout the day, then sitting down to a communal feast that reflects everything you’ve cooked and shared. While it’s lovely to want to bring a partner to the final meal, we find it tends to change the dynamic of the group. If they’d like to take part, we encourage you to book them in for the full day. Alternatively, they’re welcome to join you for a drink at the end of the session if you’d like them to experience the atmosphere and setting.

Can children attend?

Our Fire School courses and Feast Nights are usually open to guests aged 16 and over. That said, if you’re hoping to bring someone younger, please get in touch – we may be able to accommodate, depending on the event. Children are welcome at daytime events and private bookings, and we’re confident they’ll enjoy our woodland playground and relaxed outdoor setting.

Can I bring my dog?

We’re happy for guests to bring well-behaved dogs, but please be aware that we have free-roaming chickens and ducks, and not all guests may be comfortable around animals. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times while on site. During meals or if requested by other guests, we ask that dogs remain in your car.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes, we do. You can purchase vouchers for all our experiences – including Fire School, Feast Nights and Fire Suppers – via our Vouchers & Products page. Vouchers can be emailed directly or printed at home, and are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Getting here

Where is High Grange?

High Grange is located in the Blackdown Hills near Dalwood, just outside Axminster, in East Devon. Our full address is:

High Grange, Burrow Knapp Way, Dalwood, Near Axminster, Devon EX13 7ES

If you’re coming from the A35, we are just above Burrow Farm Gardens. If you’re coming from Somerset, we’re located just before it. You can search for “High Grange Devon” on Google Maps or Apple Maps to find us. For more detailed directions, visit our Contact page.

Do I need a car to get to High Grange?

Ideally, yes. However, it is possible to get here without one if you plan in advance. The closest train stations are Axminster (5 miles away) and Honiton (7 miles away), both of which have taxi services. We strongly advise booking taxis in advance, as rural services are limited. Axminster has a direct line to London Waterloo, taking around 2 hours and 40 minutes, and it’s just 35 minutes to Exeter.

Where can I stay?

There are lots of great places to stay nearby, including B&Bs, glamping sites, self-catering cottages and boutique hotels. We’ve put together a list of local accommodation options, which you can explore on our Where to Stay page. Lyme Regis is just a 15-minute drive and is a lovely seaside town with plenty of charm. You’ll also find great stays in Dalwood, Kilmington, Stockland and surrounding villages.

Do you offer camping?

We’re not able to offer overnight camping or allow campervans on site due to insurance restrictions. However, there is a lovely campsite just down the road which we’re happy to recommend. Do drop us an email if you’d like help arranging nearby camping options.

I have a campervan

While we can’t accommodate campervans here on site, there’s a nearby campsite just down the road that does. Feel free to get in touch, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

I'm coming to an event

What time does the event start?

We send an email around one week before each event with everything you need to know, including arrival times, directions and what to bring. You can also check your booking confirmation or the event calendar on our website for start and finish times. If you’re still unsure, just drop us a message.

Where will I park?

When you arrive, please enter through the second gate on the left and follow the signs to our car park. There is a gravel car park to the left with space for around 10 cars, and a larger woodchip overflow car park on the right. If you can, we encourage lift-sharing. Please don’t park on the grass unless you want to risk being towed out by a friendly local farmer the next day. Let a member of staff know if you need help parking.

I’d like to get a taxi

Here are the local taxi and coach services we recommend. For Feast Nights and Fire Suppers, please make sure your taxi is booked for no later than 11pm:

  • Neville Causley Cabs – 01297 642011
  • Graham – 07831 373614
  • Axminster Taxis – 01297 34000
  • Sewards Coaches – 01404 881343
  • Go Eco Cabs – 01297 445444 — www.go-ecocabs.com

Do you accept cash?

We don’t keep cash on site, so all payments should be made by card. Tips for our team can be added to your card payment or given in cash if preferred.

What happens in bad weather?

We cook and eat outdoors in almost all weather conditions. Our Feast events can move inside to the Shippen barn if the weather is particularly bad, but Fire School takes place outside, whatever the forecast. We do have shelter, but please come prepared for all conditions – waterproofs, layers, and warm socks are always a good idea.

What should I wear?

High Grange is all about being immersed in nature, so we recommend dressing for the outdoors. You’ll be outside for at least part of the event – and all of it if you’re attending Fire School. Please wear sturdy footwear, bring extra layers, and don’t forget sun cream in the summer months.

Food and drink

What will the menu be?

The menu depends on the type of event, the time of year and what’s available from our local suppliers. All our food is cooked outdoors over wood fire, using high-quality ingredients sourced from Devon. The dishes listed on our Feast or Fire School pages are a guide – but the final menu is always shaped by what’s freshest and best that week (or even that day).

What if I follow a particular diet?

We’re always happy to cater for dietary requirements at our Feast and Fire Supper events – we just ask that you let us know at least one week in advance, as we may not be able to accommodate dietary needs if informed on the day. Fire School is a bit different, as cooking meat and fish is central to the day. If you have specific dietary needs, please check with us before booking. At the moment, we’re not offering dietary alternatives for our Takeaway offerings.

What drinks are available?

We offer a thoughtfully selected drinks list featuring organic and biodynamic wines, locally brewed beers, seasonal cocktails and soft drinks. We prioritise working with local producers who care for the land and produce drinks that reflect their place and values.

Do you serve decaffeinated options?

Yes. We provide tea, herbal teas and coffee at all our events, and decaffeinated options are available upon request.

Terms and conditions

I need to cancel

If you need to cancel a booking, please contact us as soon as possible. With enough notice, we’ll offer a voucher valid for 6 months from the original booking date. However, because we buy all our food fresh and often last-minute, cancellations made within 1 week of a Feast or Fire Supper, or within 2 weeks of a Fire School, are non-refundable. You’re very welcome to gift your space to someone else — just let us know their name and email. We’ll also do our best to refill the space from our waiting list if we can.

Will High Grange ever cancel?

Very occasionally, we may need to cancel an event due to circumstances beyond our control — such as severe weather or illness. We reserve the right to do so. In this case, you will be offered a full refund or a voucher to rebook on a future date. Please note that we cannot accept responsibility for any other costs incurred, such as travel or accommodation.
